In a place in our country where you can take an epic sunset picture nearly everyday, its hard say there is one location in San Diego that is better than another. I’ll let you in on my new favorite secret spot to take amazing sunset pictures with a cool piece of art work to sit on.Visit the the Southern section of the Torrey Pines State reserve just north of the Torrey Pines State Park to get one of the best Sunset pictures in San Diego. The piece of artwork was formed when the city of Del Mar decided to cut down an old Torrey Pine due to damage from bark beetles. The city hired Tim Richards, who is known for his famous carvings, to turn the tree into a living piece of art for everyone to enjoy. He created a beautiful piece with a small set of stairs up to the stump, and the bench section accented with a gorgeous Red Tail Hawk. The Red Tail hawk is the official bird of the Torrey Pines Reserve.

This piece of art work combined with the steep bluffs of Camino Del Mar provide an amazing view at any point of the day, especially during Sunset. Hike along the winding trails though thick Torrey Pines along the cliffs or down to the beautiful state beach to get up close and personal with the Pacific. But beware, because you have to cross the very active railroad tracks with a train passing every 15 minutes. The tracks combined with the beach and cliffs offer another unique and beautiful photo opportunity. Continue across the bridge for more unique photo opportunities, throw down a blanket with wine for a romantic evening or grab a beer with friends in Del Mar to cap off an amazing evening.

Directions from San Diego: Drive North on the 5. Take Exit 33B for Carmel Valley Rd., turn left on Carmel Valley rd and drive 1.5 miles until you reach the coast or Old Hwy 101. At this intersection veer right onto S Camino Del Mar. At this intersection is the bridge that goes over the rail road tracks, another bridge near the state park crosses the outlet from the Los Penasquitos Lagoon. Both offer unique photo opportunities. Once you have veered right onto S Camino Del Mar, continue heading north and you will see the Sunset seat on your left after about 200 yards. You can’t park here so you have to go to the first stop light in Del mar and make a U-Turn. Park along the side of the road once you can see the ocean. The Sunset Seat and Best Sunset in San Diego will be on your right. Have fun making unique photos of your own.
